I'd love to help but . . .
If my psychosis was not so entertaining, I'm sure I would have been locked up years ago. But that's the way it goes, I suppose. Karl Rove's offspring are pissing all over this year's elections. Yes, the Republican party in Iowa is really making waves. In one case their tactics have lost them a candidate. Not in any traditional way. No, one of their candidates left the party because he was so disgusted by the party's tactics. In his race, the GOP sent a mailing to households accusing the Democratic candidate of being soft on child molesters. Why? Well as a public defender the Democrat did his constitutional duty and acted ethically in handling a case involving a child molester. Republicans these days seem to have a real problem with the Constitution and ethics. (To be fair, there are certainly a number of Democrats these days having problems with ethics; they seem to do well when it comes to honoring the Constitution, though, which gives them a decided edge.)
In another case in northeast Iowa, Republican candidates are attacking certain Democratic House members for their votes on a couple of key bills. The problem? The Democrats they are attacking were not in the House when those votes were taken. Ah, but why should we let facts get in the way of a good attack?
I used to be fond of saying that we should demand better, that we deserved more from our representatives. But I'm not too sure we do. We're a pretty lazy and uninformed society; and for the most part we are that way by choice. Our decisions are based on assumption and poorly researched information. We prefer watching Wife Swap to reading The Sun Also Rises. We would rather hop on the interstate than take the back roads. We would rather believe Wikpedia than do a little digging. We want the freedom without the responsibility. And so we have the government we deserve. We have a world crumbling under the weight of our own bad decisions and our unwillingness to clean up after ourselves or change our behavior.
We are getting exactly what we deserve. And whereas I once was upset and chose to fight against it, I've learned to enjoy watching us fall under the weight of our own hubris.
